General Description

Help us learn more about the fungus among us. The MycoBlitz is an opportunity to learn a lot about a group of organisms in a short amount of time, thanks to the help of volunteers like you.

Fungi are incredibly important yet overlooked in our ecosystems. Some fungi partner with many different kinds of plants and trees to help them acquire the nutrients they need from the soil, in exchange for the plants’ sugars. They also decompose organic matter and make it re-usable for other organisms. Without fungi, we would be neck deep in detritus!

Very little is known about fungal diversity in Dakota County. This event will contribute to the MN Mycoflora Project, and staff will be on hand to help identify specimens and prepare them for the Bell Museum mycological collection. Mushroom experts, including members of the MN Mycological Society and UMN Mycology Club, will be on hand throughout the event to help with identification and to share their knowledge about the ecological roles of these mysterious organisms.

This is one of the few times where the public is allowed to collect mushrooms in Dakota County Parks, so don't miss this in-depth and fun learning opportunity.
