ABOUT THE POSITION
The Program Manager oversees the After-School Tutoring & Writing Program (ASTW), a community-based program that provides 50+ students weekly one-on-one academic and writing support each school year. As Program Manager, this person works to cultivate a strong and supportive community of families, tutors, and students, and promotes rigorous academic support and a creative laboratory for writing and self-expression. The position requires a leader with strong bilingual Spanish-English command.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages After School Tutoring & Writing Program
- Oversees day-to-day program operations
- Manages parent and family relationships, including communications such as ASTW parent newsletter and Writer of the Month
- Recruits and onboards new families and students into the program throughout the school-year
- Builds rapport with students to create a welcoming, creative and academically rigorous learning environment
- Supports tutors in areas such as homework help, creative writing, and student behavior management
- Tracks student registration, attendance, and other programmatic paperwork
- Manages student pre- and post- surveys and evaluationsGenerates and updates resources for students
- Develops curriculum, writing prompts, and activities to engage students in the writing process
- Manages 2-3 program interns per season
- Maintains attendance goals, communicates regularly with Development Team on grant requirements
Fosters a strong and informed Volunteer Tutor community
- Trains and manages volunteer tutors
- Provides opportunities for community-building among volunteers, in monthly check-ins and regular appreciation efforts
- Collaborates with the Director of Programs and Volunteer Manager to plan thematic volunteer community building events and special trainings
- Regularly communicates with Volunteer Dept. to predict shortages and actively recruit new volunteers
Manages Chapbook Publications
- Works with Director of Program to develop curriculum for chapbook projects
- Coordinates typing, editing, design, translation, layout, and production of chapbooks with support from Publications Coordinator
- Acts as project lead on up to 3 publications per year, including the dual-language edition
- Leads annual translation party for dual-language chapbook
- Recruits Spanish language volunteers for bilingual chapbook
Manages special events and projects
- Leads 826CHI’s annual arts-based summer camp
- Fosters the development of a thriving parent community, including parent nights on relevant topics pertinent to student growth and development
- Organizes and communicates with Parent Advisory Committee
- Coordinates chapbook release parties and community events
- Actively coordinates Speakers and Snacks, recruiting guest speakers and communicating plans to all parties.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Minimum 3 years experience teaching ages 6 to 13 in structured learning environments
- Working knowledge of the Chicago Public School system and understanding of educational themes
- Management experience, specifically working with volunteers and interns
- Exceptional communications skills, both written and oral including public speaking
- Excellent organizational skills & the ability to multitask
- Verbal and written Spanish language fluency
- A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to manage multiple independent projects successfully
- Knowledge of publishing and design (ideal, though not required)
- Enthusiastic belief in the mission of 826CHI
- Outgoing and personable
Reporting
The Program Manager reports to the Director of Programs and is a member of the Programming Team.

826CHI is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist with our writing programs, as well as with other aspects of the organization (supporting the Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co., providing graphic design and illustration for our student publications).
