Duties & Responsibilities
Volunteers will assist Parks staff in conducting a small mammal survey at Lebanon Hills Regional Park. Small live traps will be set and baited in the evening hours. Traps will be checked with staff in the morning hours. Staff will identify species, take measurements, and release any critters that were caught. Volunteers can expect to learn about Dakota County’s wildlife monitoring efforts and small mammal surveying methods. Staff will be responsible for handling wildlife, taking measurements, etc, but volunteers are welcome to take photos or just observe and learn during this time.

Training/setting live traps: Monday, August 6 th, 6:00-9pm (REQUIRED)
Checking traps: Tuesday, August 7 th 7-10am
Setting traps: Tuesday, August 7 th 6-8pm
Checking traps: Wednesday, August 8 th 7-10am
Setting traps: Wednesday, August 8 th 6-8pm
Checking/removing traps: Thursday, August 9 th 7-11am
RAINDATE: Setting traps: Thursday, August 9 th 6-8pm
RAINDATE: Checking/removing traps: Friday, August 10 th 7-11am
Minimum Qualifications
Must be 18+, able to walk through tall vegetation and on uneven terrain.
Minimum Time Commitment
Volunteers must attend the training on Wednesday evening to participate. In addition, you must commit to one other evening of setting traps. There is no minimum or maximum requirement for morning shifts, but trap checking in the morning does have limited capacity and priority will be given to folks who set traps the night before. You are welcome to sign-up for as many shifts as you are available for.
Activity Level - If working outside or non-office work.
Medium - May involve varying amounts of activity (long walks, rough terrain, and moderate physical exertion. May not be recommended for volunteers with physical limitations. Comfortable, sturdy shoes and long pants required.
Required Training
Must attend training on Monday, August 6 th. Training will include instructions on how to set/bait traps. Volunteers will help staff set the traps that evening.
Other Information
In the event of rain, traps will remain closed and the rain dates will be used.
