ORGANIZATION: Santa Fe Springs City Library - Literacy Services

These volunteers explain/interpret historical exhibits at the Park. Although our main focus for the docent program is in the train exhibit or Carriage Barn, other areas of the park may be of interest to volunteers.

Exhibit docents may be asked to work 3-6 hours of volunteer time per week during the year. Exhibits are open to the general public year round from 12-4 p.m. Docents are called on an "as needed" basis.

Education and Special Training: Docents should complete the following training at Heritage Park within the first three months of their commitment. Trainings will be scheduled by the Docent Coordinator.

  • Orientation: 2 hours
  • Tour Workshops: 1-2 hours (shadowing tours)
  • Supervised Tour and Evaluation

Preferred Skills:

  • Enjoy interacting with people, especially children
  • Some knowledge of levels of development and understanding of history and social studies within K-12 students
  • Should possess the ability to learn and share accurate information
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Display sensitivity and understanding when working with diverse audiences
  • Professional demeanor and appearance
  • Should be flexible and able to improvise
  • Able to command attention and lead groups
