Project Open Hand’s mission is to improve health outcomes and quality of life by providing nutritious meals to the sick and vulnerable, caring for and educating our community. Our Wellness Programs focus on serving people who are critically ill and need nutritious food to support their medical treatment. The program is available to residents of San Francisco and Alameda County, who qualify based on a primary diagnosis and symptoms.

We are seeking a volunteer to provide administrative support and light client engagement to our coordinators in our Wellness Programs. Responsibilities include:

  • Enter new or recertifying applications into the client database
  • Save applications on POH internal system
  • Support with data entry as needed including client data collection
  • Support clients in completing their grocery/meal shopping list

Qualifications:

  • Detail-oriented, able to follow directions, and take initiative when needed
  • Computer literate (MS Office/Outlook)
  • Ability to work as part of a team within a culturally diverse environment

Desired Skill Sets:

  • Comfort/knowledge around people living with critical illness, homelessness, mental health issues, and/or substance abuse
  • Knowledge around HIPAA, confidentiality and data protection requirements

Time Commitment:

At least 3 months; 1-2 times per week; 2-3 hours per shift

Mission Statement

Project Open Hand provides food and nourishment to improve the quality of life for the men, women and children it serves. Project Open Hand programs include: meal, grocery and nutrition counseling for people with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; congregate lunch and nutrition education for people over 60 years of age; meal service for homebound and critically ill people under the age of 60. Services are available to eligible clients living in San Francisco and Alameda counties.

Description

Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides meals with love to critically ill neighbors and seniors. Our food is like medicine, helping clients recover from illness, get stronger, and lead healthier lives.

Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers daily to nourish our community.
