Teens Leading Change (Playa Vista)

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Los Angeles Public Library

  • 9 people are interested

The Westchester-Loyola Village Branch Library, in partnership

with the Playa Vista Branch Library, is recruiting Teen Council

members between the ages of 14-18 to design and participate in a

project which will incorporate yoga principles and civic

engagement.

The project’s goals are to teach teens how to

combat stress through yoga and mindfulness, develop coping

skills, and gain better self-knowledge. Teens will also increase

critical-thinking skills necessary to evaluate current social

issues and political events, as well as learn compassion, social

awareness, and how to listen and be supportive of one another.

With the assistance of instructors from Loyola Marymount

University’s Yoga Graduate School and UCLA’s Mindful and

Awareness Research Center, teens will meet once a week, from

mid-July through mid-December. This program offers teens the

opportunity to gain leadership skills and make a difference in

their communities

About Los Angeles Public Library

Location:

630 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071, US

Mission Statement

The Los Angeles Public Library provides free and easy access to information, ideas, books and technology that enrich, educate and empower every individual in our city's diverse communities.

Description

The Los Angeles Public Library is largest public research institution west of the Mississippi.

With more than 70 branch libraries and Central Library subject departments serving millions of Angelenos on a yearly basis, our programs are supported by thousands of volunteers in a variety of capacities. Whether providing one on one literacy tutoring, cutting out craft supplies for story time activities, helping serve summer lunch at the library, or serving as a Friend of the Library, all volunteers play a role in the work of LAPL.

If you would like to volunteer, but don't see a listing that matches your interests, please contact your local branch or the Volunteer Engagement Office. Opportunities and needs vary by location and fluctuate throughout the year.

Please note that the minimum age for volunteers is 14 (with the exception of 11-13-year-olds joining Teen Councils), minimum time commitments are required for most opportunities, adult volunteers working with children will be fingerprinted, and LAPL does not accept court-mandated community service.
