Calling all foodies!
Share your love of food with the residents of Washington, D.C. Roots for Life is looking for someone who wants to get residents excited about healthy eating. This position will be responsible for leading cooking and/or nutrition education sessions that include healthy recipe sampling, visual aide(s) and handouts at various sites.
Expectations
The Cooking and Nutrition Educator will serve as a teacher and role model, teaching and reinforcing key messages about healthy eating and inspiring residents to adopt healthy eating habits. Educator should (1) Have an outgoing personality and positive attitude; (2) dress and act in a professional manner; and (3) demonstrate good communication and public speaking skills.
Responsibilities
- Assist in food preparation/cooking classes in Washington, D.C.
- Help answer basic nutrition questions from individuals participating in the cooking and nutrition classes
- Adhere to food safety guidelines in preparation, transportation and serving of food
- Collect feedback from program participants during nutrition education sessions
- Be open-minded and empathize with the needs of our local communities
- Be punctual, self-motivated, cooperative and flexible
Requirements
- A love of cooking using fruits and veggies as a bases
- A basic understanding of nutrition and how to use fruits and veggies in the diet
- ServSafe Certified, or willing to take class to become certified
- Nutrition training at an accredited institution. Registered Dietitian and/or four-year degree in nutrition, food science, dietetics, or related field preferred. Dietetic interns are encouraged to apply. We also accept dietetic students in their senior year
- Experience is a plus
- Interest and comfort in working with low-income individuals from diverse backgrounds
Compensation Details: This is an unpaid/volunteer position. Volunteer will be asked to commit to a minimum of 1 - 2 cooking classes or education classes per month. Hours will vary. Volunteer must be able to travel to class locations.
