Position: Crisis Counseling Intern

Essential Duties
Provide crisis counseling and medical and legal advocacy within Ampersand’s 17 county service region.
- Provide telephone support on our 24/7 support line
- Listen to, believe, and support individuals impacted by sexual violence using crisis intervention skills and grounding techniques
- Provide accurate information to callers about crime victims’ rights, the police reporting process, medical assistance, community resources, and Ampersand programs
- Complete the initial intake paperwork with new clients via telephone
- Provide in-person advocacy at hospital emergency rooms and police departments
- Respond to area hospitals to provide in-person support and advocacy for individuals impacted by sexual violence
- Provide support and information to survivors and family/friends of survivors during medical and forensic processes
- Collaborate with medical and criminal justice staff to ensure coordinated services to survivors seeking care
- Complete all Ampersand documentation of direct services on time and in compliance with HIPAA and Ampersand policy

Qualifications
- Must be 20 years of age or older
- Be able to pass a background and reference check
- Have access to reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and appropriate level of insurance
- Be willing to drive up to 1 hour as part of daily duties
- Complete the 40-hour volunteer training
- Commit to at least 20 service hours a month
- Willing to take an intersectional, anti-oppression approach to work
- Basic understanding of interpersonal violence

Description
Ampersand Sexual Violence Resource Center serves the Bluegrass Area Development District in Central Kentucky. Ampersand is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization providing a 24-hour support hotline, advocacy, medical accompaniment, and free counseling to survivors of sexual assault, their friends and families. We also work with community partners to provide free prevention education on topics such as healthy relationships, bystander intervention, bullying, and much more.
