Position: Marketing & Communications Associate for the Water Team

Type: Unpaid Volunteer Position

Time Commitment: 10 - 15 hours/ week / 3-6 months

Reporting to: Senior Director of the Water Team

About the position:

Working under the supervision of Senior Director of the Water Team, the associate oversees and manages activities, procedures and tasks related to marketing campaigns and initiatives. We are offering qualified candidates the opportunity to gather experience and to prove their capabilities in a non-profit organization environment engaging with Bay Area companies of all sizes in the field of sustainability. We are looking for motivated individuals who enjoy collaborating in a team environment. It is preferred that the candidate has his/her own laptop and communications tools; however, a computer can be provided, if necessary.

In return for the volunteer hours, the benefits to the volunteer candidate may include: reference letter from the Executive Director of SSV, experience gained while volunteering on various projects, networking opportunities, and current resume entry. This is a great position for those looking to gain experience in the green industry. Most importantly, you will be helping the organization work towards its vision of a sustainable region, a thriving economy, a healthy environment and socially equitable community.

Qualities and Skills:

  • Experience with email marketing tool MailChimp
  • Dependable, motivated professional, used to take on responsibility, communicating clearly and producing agreed upon results reliably.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team setting and contribute to team goals.
  • Good communication skills in interaction with partners, colleagues and visitors.
  • Experienced in working with PC or Mac and standard office applications (e.g. MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare newsletters and social media communications.
  • Update website and post announcements about SSV water events on other organizations’ websites.
  • Participate in general office activities and assist with general clerical duties as related to SSV marketing initiatives.
  • Actively involve in phone campaigns targeting new partners, members and volunteers.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of partner, staff and agency information.
  • Research sustainability initiatives from prospect partners and reach out to target organizations via phone and mail, winning them to partner with SSV in their sustainability efforts.
  • Analyze publication platforms (press, Internet, TV & radio) and help develop and execute campaigns, using appropriate channels to grow SSV partner community, achieve higher publicity, and enhance profile.
  • Support SSV Administration in ensuring up to date partner, prospect, and volunteer contacts.
  • Manage correspondence and reply, forward, follow-up as appropriate in a professional fashion.
  • File and retrieve marketing related information.
  • Create and modify documents such as reports, emails, letters and meeting minutes using text processing, spreadsheet, database or presentation software such as Microsoft Office or similar programs.
  • May conduct research, compile data and prepare papers for consideration and presentation to the Executive Director, SSV Board of Directors, and staff.
  • Set up and coordinate meetings and conferences.
  • Compile, transcribe and distribute minutes of meetings and follow up on action items.
  • Support staff in assigned project-based work.
  • May supervise volunteers and other support personnel.
  • Participate and assist in SSV events and workshops.
