Do you have up to three hours a week to help make a difference?Do you have a passion for advancing social justice? Are you looking for a vital and important volunteer experience? Then apply to the Check-In Program today!

Since 1993, Check-In volunteers have provided information and referrals, along with a sensitive and caring ear, to AIDS Action Committee’s clients, helping to maintain a strong connection between clients and staff members.

Volunteers complement our services by helping clients work through problems and encouraging successes. Volunteers report feeling very connected to their work and enjoy the warm and supportive team atmosphere.

Volunteers must be able to:

  • Commit to a Tuesday or Wednesday evening shift of up to 3 hours
  • Provide a consistent, caring connection by phone for people living with HIV/AIDS
  • Develop relationships with a set roster of clients over time
  • Converse with clients in a compassionate, non-judgmental fashion
  • Provide referrals and information on agency services or outside resources, as needed
  • Record interactions with clients in agency database with accuracy and objectivity
  • Work with Program Coordinator to expedite services for clients with critical or emergent needs

Older adults, members of the LGBTQ Community, and Persons with foreign language fluency (in particular Spanish and Haitian Creole) are especially encouraged to apply.

The Check-In Program requires a 12 month commitment. The Check-In Volunteer position is a serious commitment that should not be taken lightly. For many clients, the Check-In Program is their only connection to the Agency.

Volunteers are part of our continuum of services, and as such, the Program is demanding and challenging but immensely rewarding. It requires excellent listening skills, compassion, patience and the ability to talk with people from all walks of life. All volunteers are asked to be compassionate and non-judgmental as well as sensitive to HIV-related issues. You should be prepared to deal with ongoing life issues, losses, challenges and triumphs. If this sounds like a desirable and rewarding challenge to you, then contact:

About AIDS Action Committee

Mission Statement

The mission of AIDS Action Committee is to stop the AIDS epidemic and related health inequities by eliminating new infections, maximizing healthier outcomes of those infected and at risk, and attacking the root causes of HIV/AIDS.

Description

AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts is a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS, advocating at the city, state, and federal levels for fair and effective AIDS policies, conducting cutting edge HIV preventionprograms, and providing health and wellness services to people already living with HIV. Founded in 1983, AIDS Action is New England’s largest AIDS service organization.

Our work - in conjunction with partners around the state - has given Massachusetts one of the best track records in tackling this epidemic.

Since 1999, we’ve seen a 53% reduction in new HIV diagnoses in Massachusetts, which has meant that over 5,000 people who might otherwise have become HIV positive have remained negative, and the state will save more than $2 billion in health care costs.

We go beyond the basics of providing safer sex kits and HIV meds and take a comprehensive approach to HIV prevention and care. We work face to face with the people most impacted by HIV. We understand their complex needs and how these needs impact their health, and we channel this information to public officials and politicians who make life-changing policy and funding decisions.

At present, we work directly with one-in-six people diagnosed with HIV in our state, and provide prevention services to thousands more. Expanding on our successful model, we’re also taking the fight to infections and diseases related to HIV, like Hepatitis C.
