Background
The 88 Project's mission is to support and encourage freedom of expression in Vietnam by sharing the stories of and advocating for Vietnamese activists who are persecuted because of their peaceful dissent. We document the situation of Vietnamese political prisoners and activists and their families and share the information through our website, database of Vietnamese political prisoners, video interview series, and other media. We also work closely with other human rights organizations to advocate for and assist Vietnamese activists at risk and their families. The organization is a 501(c)(3) non-profit registered in the United States.
Job Description
Position: Human rights research officers, full-time or part-time
Duration of the contract: 1 year renewable, with a probation period of 3 months.
Location: Remote or Asia-based
Salary: Asia-based salary rate
Responsibilities:
-- Monitor, fact check, and report on the situation of Vietnamese activists at risk in both English and Vietnamese via weekly articles for our website https://the88project.org/
-- Assist with researching and updating The 88 Project’s databases of Vietnamese activists at risk
-- Assist with advocacy and assistance planning and actions for specific activists at risk by researching and providing relevant information upon request by other team members
-- Assist in any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Assistant Director
-- Complete all work in a timely fashion
-- Maintain work product confidentiality and basic data security measures
Qualifications:
-- Strong command of both English and Vietnamese required
-- Demonstrated experience in human rights research and advocacy
-- Solid understanding of Vietnamese politics, Vietnamese civil society movements, and international human rights, especially the rights to freedom of expression and political participation, as demonstrated by previous work, preferred
-- Attention to detail
-- Responsive in communications

Description
We maintain several types of tools that international governments and advocates use to press for reform in Vietnam and the release of political prisoners, including our searchable Vietnamese Political Prisoner and Activist Database and Interactive Map. We have other tools to provide information on the human rights situation in Vietnam and to raise awareness about the subject, like our weekly newsletter, interviews with activists, and our social media platforms.
