West Philadelphia Alliance for Children (WePAC) is the only organization systematically reopening school libraries in Philadelphia. We are able to continue to do this by recruiting volunteers. Our greatest need is for regular, weekly volunteers in school libraries serving on a set time of day, at least three hours a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays during regular school hours for one academic year.
Volunteering for a WePAC library means being a part of a team of caring people passionate about sharing the love of reading with the children of Philadelphia. Together, each library team plans read-aloud sessions that support classroom learning. Volunteers read aloud to our students during story-time and help them select books to borrow during check out.
Library teams see classes on a regular basis, coordinated with each school’s schedule. We are responsible for the appearance and organization of our libraries. Together, we decorate the library, catalog donated books, check books in and out, and re-shelve books. We draw on the diverse skills of our team to students excited about reading!
No library experience is required.
School libraries make a difference and WePAC volunteers are a part of that difference!
