Description: AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system implemented in Madison Metropolitan middle and high schools. AVID Tutors facilitate small, student-led tutorial groups, model and support the development of inquiry and critical thinking skills, and evaluate the quality of student thinking by grading student work. Bilingual AVID Tutors work with AVID students during the academic school day who are a part of our dual language immersion programming and receiving academic instruction in both Spanish and English languages. Verbally leading small collaborative groups as well as reading and grading student work in both languages would be an expectation of the role.
AVID Tutor Work Schedule and Location:
- Bilingual AVID Tutors are needed in three AVID schools in MMSD: Sennett Middle School, Sherman Middle School, and La Follette High School.
- Tutors are required to work the same schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or Tuesday through Friday.
- Tutors are scheduled somewhere between 5-15 hours of work per week.
- Interviews for Spring semester will begin in early January. Training and placement will follow after training is complete.
Bilingual AVID Tutor Required Qualifications:
- Fluency or high level of proficiency in both Spanish and English languages.
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or have received a bachelor’s degree.
- Proven track record in reliability, punctuality, and consistency
- Previous experience working with middle school or high school aged youth.
- Experience facilitating small collaborative group

Mission Statement
Advancement Via Individual Determination (or AVID) is a college readiness system that includes an elective course focused on organizational strategies, study skills, critical thinking, tutorial support, and career and college awareness. In MMSD, AVID is partnered with the Teens of Promise (TOPS) program through the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County. TOPS provides full-time student coordinators in each of the four high schools, summer internships, after-school mentors, funding for more than 100 tutors during the elective course, and a variety of college and career field trips. The mission of AVID/TOPS is to assist students in developing the habits, academic skills and personal attributes to successfully graduate from high school, enroll and graduate from a post-secondary institution.

AVID Tutors work with AVID students during the academic school day and are an integral part of the AVID college readiness elective course. Additional duties include attending regular tutorial debrief meetings and additional professional learning scheduled throughout the year.
