The Walama Restoration Project and National Forest Service are working to establish and support the Mt. Hood Pollinator Garden in the Clackamas watershed. Volunteers for native seed collection are needed from July through September 2018 to assist with this effort. Field work will entail wilderness hikes in Mt. Hood National Forest to 1) scout for native plant populations, 2) record phenology of plants (e.g., flowering, fruiting, or seeding), and 3) collect seed. Participants will receive training in plant identification, navigation/mapping, and techniques for processing native plant materials.
Volunteers must always be prepared for a long off-trail hike in the wilderness and will need to commit to at least one 8-hour day in the field. Willingness to use a personal vehicle is preferred.
Project Background:
The garden will feature over 40 species of native plants that provide forage and hosts for pollinators. Seed produced at the garden will be used on forest health improvement projects across over 111 acres of habitat, and the garden will allow the Forest Service to have a continuous and diverse seed bank to use for soil productivity, habitat for wildlife control of exotic weeds, and reestablishment of native plant species.

Educational programs and stewardship opportunities include plant identification, native seed collection, plant propagation, native bee surveys, monarch and milkweed surveys, orienteering, and mapping. Our contracting services include mechanical thinning, prescribed burns, and revegetation. We only use of nonchemical methods of invasive weed control in all of our projects.
