ORGANIZATION: Literacy Action of Central Arkansas

Project LIFT is a free family literacy program with the goal of promoting reading and education in the home for children and parents in lower-income communities in our area. We offer weekly hands-on instruction that teaches adults how to advocate for and read to their children while providing fun and engaging book-based activities for kids. This summer, we'll meet in southwest Little Rock at the Greater Second Baptist Church gym on Tuesday evenings from 5:45-7:30 from June 25th to August 6th.
We are looking for volunteers to help set up activities, interact with children during craft and reading time, help facilitate parent lessons, and assist with clean up. Email our Program Director, Sarah Standridge, at sstandridge@literacyactionar.org or call us at 501-372-7323 if you are interested in helping out any or all evenings.

Mission Statement

Literacy Action of Central Arkansas is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that teaches reading skills to adults and English language skills to non-native adults. We strive to build a community of adults empowered through literacy.

Description

Literacy Action of Central Arkansas, founded in 1986, provides one-on-one tutoring for adults whose needs are not served by traditional classroom adult education programs in the Little Rock area. Over the years, the organization has recruited and trained hundreds of community volunteers who have taught thousands of adults to read. In 1999, the program expanded to offer tutoring to immigrants who wished to improve their English skills. Today, there are adult students from countries around the world who work with tutors to learn English and to use their new skills to fully participate in community life.

Tutors and their students meet together for about three hours per week in public places throughout the Little Rock and Conway areas. Instruction is tailored to the literacy skills and learning objectives of each student. Tutors work with students on practical applications of their new skills so that students see the benefits of their efforts right away. Learning to read or speak English is hard work, but most students see significant progress in the first twelve months of instruction.

All services are offered free of charge. The program depends on the efforts of volunteers who give thousands of hours each year and on the financial support of individuals and organizations who realize the importance of addressing the tough issues of literacy.

Literacy Action of Central Arkansas is a member of the Arkansas Literacy Councils, Inc., an a affiliate of Proliteracy America and a designated agency of the United Way.
