SUMMARY:
The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association is the only national not-for-profit voluntary health organization dedicated solely to the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (often called Lou Gehrig's disease). The mission of The ALS Association is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.

As part of The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter, the Special Events Intern will work in collaboration with the Chapter staff to prepare and execute the annual Walk to Defeat ALS fundraising program, the Lou Gehrig Sports Awards Dinner and additional fundraising events. He/she will play an important role in the day to day operations required to plan a successful event and meet revenue goals. Additional roles and responsibilities are detailed below. He/she will report to members of the Events team, depending on project relevance.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF INTERN:

  • Assist with duties requiring an understanding of The ALS Association’s programs and procedures
  • Assist in preparation of routine correspondence, database reports and mailings
  • Aid in logistical planning of Walk to Defeat ALS(r) and supporting events
  • Communicate with Walk participants and donors. Provide support and motivation, as necessary.
  • Contribute to the successful use of social media for fundraising purposes (Facebook, Twitter, etc)
  • Help to secure packages for silent auction for Lou Gehrig Sports Award Dinner
  • Attend Chapter special events as desired
  • Other related duties as agreed upon between intern and supervisor

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently seeking college degree in non-profit, event planning, or related discipline preferred.
  • Ability to work between 10/15 hours per week
  • Ability to work independently and well with others
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented and hardworking

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ALS ASSOCIATION:

  • Provide a background for understanding of the Walk to Defeat ALS(r) program and fundraising events
  • Provide guidance and instruction for day-to-day operations and program tasks
  • Serve as a resource to Intern for questions, concerns, and perspective
  • Provide adequate supervision throughout Internship term
  • Work with college/university to award credit for internship, if desired by candidate
