Do you love libraries, books and/or both? Would you enjoy reading stories to students and helping them fall in love with reading? Then this volunteer opportunity is for YOU!

The West Philadelphia Alliance for Children is now seeking volunteers to help with shelving, cataloging and organizing books to prepare for the opening of our newest school library at Harrington Elementary school!

Volunteering in a WePAC library means being part of a team of caring people, passionate about sharing the love of reading with the children of Philadelphia.

Who can volunteer:

  • Anyone who desires to make a difference in a child's life & education by engaging them with books and reading

  • West Philadelphia residents who want to foster a love for reading in your community

  • Local college students who need to gain experience working with children and/or potential mentors in fellow volunteers.

What the children can gain from you:

  • The comfort of being read to.

  • Confidence in their reading and academic ability

  • The knowledge that their community cares about them and a LOVE of READING!

No library experience required.

WePAC’s mission is to promote childhood literacy by engaging volunteers in Philadelphia public schools through re-opening and staffing libraries and academic mentoring. In our vision, every Philadelphia student will be empowered with the literacy skills vital to the success of the child and the prosperity of our community.

Description

WePAC re-opens and staffs volunteer-run libraries in Philadelphia public elementary schools. WePAC volunteers can serves in a variety of functions. Library Team Members work together during regular school hours to host library sessions that support classroom learning. Every session includes a storytime and book check out for students. Library Cataloguers can work behind the scenes and at a varitey of school libraries cataloguing additions to our collections. If you are not sure how you'd like to volunteer with WePAC email katelin@wepac.org and ask to be added to our volunteer council list for special opportunities.
