Would you like to gain experience teaching English and make a difference in the lives of your neighbors? Volunteer as a teacher, classroom assistant or one-on-one tutor with Minnesota Literacy Council!

Current Opportunities in East St. Paul:

Classroom assistant/small group pullouts, Pre-Beginning ESL: Mondays, 12:00-1:30 beginning in March. The ideal candidate will feel comfortable (after training and guidance) pulling out a small group of very low level learners to work on alphabetics and phonics skills.

Classroom assistant, Intermediate ESL: Fridays, 9:30-11:30 (math) and/or 12:00-1:30 (English), beginning ASAP; and Mondays, 9:30-11:30 beginning in March.

Classroom assistant, Advanced ESL: Thursdays, 9:30-11:30 (English) and/or 12:00-1:30 (math)

Conversation practice partner/navigator: Flexible (2-4 hours/week, any day Monday-Friday, between 9:30 am-1:30 pm). In this newly created hybrid role, volunteers will work one-on-one with students to practice their English conversation skills and build confidence speaking and understanding English. In this practice, volunteers will use a provided question framework that will help them get to know the students better and learn about their life goals and challenges. Once they have built a relationship with a student, if the student needs help and feels comfortable, the volunteer will begin to help the student navigate the challenges they are facing by helping them set goals, find resources, etc.

No previous teaching experience or foreign language proficiency required! Curriculum and materials are provided. An excellent 12 hour training course, provided by the Minnesota Literacy Council, will prepare you to be a wonderful teacher.

Make a difference in someone's life by helping them learn the English language or earn a GED.
