Born Dancing creates original modern dance performances that feature dancers with and without disabilities. Additionally we offer Dance Education as well as Dance Production Apprenticeship programs for students with disabilities or high-needs. Born Dancing is founded on the belief that people of all ages and abilities should have access to every aspect of dance.
Our performances and dance education programs provide Students With Disabilities and High-Needs Students with real-world dance performance and production experiences, apprenticeships to learn job and social skills, and internships in performing arts production and related fields. Our overarching goal is to facilitate the employment of people with disabilities in performing arts production.
We are currently seeking two board members to round out our current roster. The board of Born Dancing meets 4-6 times per year. Board members are expected help grow and maintain the organization's administrative, legal, and financial frameworks, lend their time and talents to specific projects to develop our programing, and participate in fundraising by raising and/or contributing funds.
The ideal board candidate will have either experience as a legal professional (preferably in possession of a JD and licensed to practice in New York State), or will have professional experience in a corporate setting or working with corporate partners or in corporate giving, or will have fundraising experience (individual giving, hosting fundraising events, grant writing, or other).

Mission Statement
Born Dancing is founded on the belief that people of all ages and abilities should have access to every aspect of dance. We produce original dance performances that feature performers with and without disabilities and we create dance education programs for under-served Students With Disabilities and High-Needs Students in New York City. Our performances and dance education programs provide Students With Disabilities and High-Needs Students with real-world dance performance and production experiences, apprenticeships to learn job and social skills, and internships in performing arts production and related fields. Our overarching goal is to facilitate the participation and employment of people with disabilities in performing arts production.
Description
Dance Education Programs: In our dance education programs SWD/HNS (2nd-12th Grade) take dance classes that transition into rehearsals for our performances. Students have classes twice a week for 8-12 weeks at their school/facility. Student-dancers perform in the shows together with company dancers with and without disabilities as part of our original full-scale dance productions at NYC theaters.
Production Apprenticeships: Adolescent SWD/HNS (14-21 years old) take classes in other elements of dance production: costume design, lighting design, box office, videography, and stage management. Following the classes, students come to the theater for a full week of on-site learning. Apprentices assist the production team during technical rehearsals as well as backstage and in the front of house during the shows.
Original Modern Dance Productions: Our one-of-a-kind dance performances bring together people of all ages from 7 to 76 with and without disabilities (Deaf, blind/low vision, Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy, paralysis, and others), and most importantly underserved children and teens with disabilities and/or high-needs from our Education and Apprenticeship Programs.
