ORGANIZATION: State Library of Oregon

  • 7 people are interested

This opportunity will take place in the Talking Book & Braille Library Division of the State Library of Oregon. Talking Books provides reading materials to print-disabled Oregonians. Over 5,000 Oregonians are registered borrowers of reading materials with an average of 1,350 books processed to mail out each day.

The collection in Talking Books has over 60,000 titles, with some of the titles having up to 15 copies. After a few years in the collection some of those titles no longer need to have so many copies available. It is our responsibility to vet the collection, remove the copies no longer needed and prepare those books for mailing to the National Library Service in Washington, D.C.

This is where you would come in! We need help preparing the books for mailing. This includes removing ID stickers on the book containers and cartridges and some potential cleaning. You may also work in the stacks retrieving books and then placing the books in a designated area after they are completed.

This is a temporary position which should last between 2 - 4 months. We are asking for this Volunteer to help 2 - 4 hours per week, anytime between 9AM - 12 PM & 1 - 3 PM. Please consider helping us with this project!

Description

The State Library of Oregon cultivates, preserves, and delivers library and information services to foster lifelong leaning and community engagement.

There are three main divisions of the State Library:

Government Information and Library Services provides research and reference assistance to state government and to persons on official state business. Their in-depth collection of more than one million items specializes in business, history, political and social sciences. The collection also includes federal and state government publications and a comprehensive collection of materials about Oregon.

Library Support and Development Services plans for statewide library development; consults with local librarians, citizens and government officials; reports library statistics; and administers state and federal library grant programs.

The Talking Book and Braille Library is the regional library for the Library of Congress' National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled.
