ORGANIZATION: SCHOLASTIC OLYMPICS INC

  • 1 person is interested

Scholastic Olympics is searching for a person who enjoys discovering new geniuses among the Gen Z in the DMV. This person would contact high schools, visit classrooms, meet with teachers, principals, school board and county council members to talk up our nonprofit program and the benefits of having students participate in the mentally challenging quadrathlon that focuses on math, speech, spelling and history. This person must share the Scholastic Olympics mission - of finding ways to attack learning deficits through unconventional and alternative programs - and convey our excitement. The Scout must work closely with the director in setting up his/her work schedule, as well as work closely with our part-time social media manager who may decide to document many of the student visits. This position initially would require about 10 hours a week from October through February and up to 20 hours a week in March and April.

Mission Statement

The purposes for which the corporation is formed are as follows: To promote healthy academic learning, scholastic competition and fun among high school students.

Description

Scholastic Olympics, Inc., is a grassroots, nonprofit organization that attacks learning deficits with alternative or unconventional educational programs. We have sponsored such programs as NBA Math Hoops, Pabulum (a writing program) and Happenin’ History. Scholastic Olympics’ signature program, developed in 2010, is an annual academic quadrathlon of math, history, speech and spelling. High school students win cash prizes, medals, plaques and other gifts donated by government and business groups. We work closely with the Prince George’s County Public Schools and partner with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation. The goal is to celebrate the academic achievements of students the same way we award and support student athletes. The competitions have impacted thousands of students in the eight years of operation and rewarded about 100 students nearly $30,000.
