Opportunity Overview
The Trustees are looking for volunteers interested in monitoring the impacts of deer herbivory (browse/feeding) on vegetation in the forest. Science has shown that when deer become abundant, overbrowsing of vegetation can alter ecosystems by preventing forest regrowth or eliminating plant species altogether. Overbrowsing can threaten rare and endangered plant species and reduce the overall biological health of our reservations. This volunteer position will monitor the height of tagged young trees and shrubs at previously established locations to determine rates of growth and current browse impacts. Trustees ecology staff will train volunteers on survey methodology and provide site orientation. Volunteers will then work on their own or with other volunteers to conduct surveys. At minimum two surveys will be conducted throughout the year, one survey will be conducted prior to the growing season and the other at the end of the growing season.
Responsibilities
- Travel off trail to permanent study locations and record the heights (in) of tagged vegetation
- Meticulously record data using data sheets and transfer data to Microsoft Excel
- Communicate effectively with staff and other volunteers
- Log volunteer hours
- Must have at least some basic familiarity with plants in Massachusetts
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs
- Willingness to work in remote locations and hike long distances
- Willingness to work under minimal supervision
- Enjoy the outdoors and have interest in ecological monitoring
One survey conducted early spring and one survey conducted in the fall. Time commitment is flexible following training. Volunteers must conduct at least two surveys - one prior to the growing season and the other towards the end of the growing season. If interested there are opportunities to increase the amount of locations to monitor.

Description
Who We Are
We are more than 100,000 people like you who love the outdoors, who love the distinctive charms of New England, and who believe in celebrating and protecting them, for everyone, forever.
Together with our neighbors, we protect the distinct character of our communities and inspire a commitment to our special places. Our passion is to share with everyone the irreplaceable natural and cultural treasures we care for.
What We Do
We enjoy and care for more than 100 special places - nearly 25,000 acres - all around Massachusetts. And we are actively building an extended family of friends and neighbors across the state that can help in their different ways.
What We Are Up Against
Through more than 100 years of hard work and high standards, The Trustees have built a sterling reputation and a stunning physical legacy.
Today, the places we care about are going fast, and the forces undermining them, including climate change, are moving faster. We need to tap the wellspring of people’s joy - in their communities, their heritage, and the natural world - and mobilize a whole new generation to care.
