Catholic Charities Labouré Center, located in South Boston, is seeking volunteers to assist in digitizing the adoption records the agency is required to preserve.
Adoption records are a vital resource. Part of the work of Catholic Charities is the post-adoption and search program which offers a continuum of services that respect the relationships among all members of the adoption triad-the adoptee, the birth parents and the adoptive parents.
To facilitate this program, a project is underway to digitize the adoption index files which make it possible to find case files. Help is needed to scan cards in PDF images with OCR indexing. The new system will make finding and search case records faster and easier.
The ideal person for this job is comfortable with computers, pays attention to details and has patience with repetitive tasks. Additionally, the volunteer must maintain strict confidentiality of all client information. Must be able to physically handle and carry index card file drawers weighing about 10 pounds each.
Training will be provided for Catholic Charities standard operating procedures and the operation of the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner and normal procedures. These include file drawer handling and techniques to maximize the probability that critical information in each case file can be found by using Windows Explorer search function.
Catholic Charities Labouré Center is accessible by public transportation (Red Line) or car.
This volunteer opportunity has flexible hours during business hours (Monday-Friday; 8:30AM-5:00PM) - schedule to be mutually agreed upon.
