School Food Drive Leader

ORGANIZATION: Paradise Valley Community Food Bank

We are looking for three volunteers to become "captains" for our PV Unified School District food drives. Each captain is responsible to assist school staff in coordinating a school-based food drive for about nine schools in the PV Unified School District. These food drives are a very important part of our food donations that supply food to the food bank to enable us to provide free food boxes to our clients. School food drives are generally held once a year (typically the student government group champions the food drive at their school) but some schools have been successful in having both a fall and spring food drive.

As a captain you will reach out to your schools via email to establish a relationship. Then work with your school contacts (typically via email) on setting a date for their food drive, coordinating the delivery of empty boxes to them in preparation for their food drive, and then coordinating several volunteers to go to the school to pick up the food drive donations and bring them to the food bank.

Our food bank has been doing this for years so there are procedures in place and a detailed notebook containing contact information and guidelines to help you. Typically most communication with the school is via e-mail or phone. There will be a school captain's meeting to announce helpful information for the new school year, answer your questions and explain the procedures. As a captain, your food drive coordinator duties span the period of August to May each year.
