Report to the art therapist and the volunteer coordinator, this program volunteer position requires expertise in one of the following areas: sewing (hand or machine), knitting, and, crocheting. Additional areas that are welcome include and not limited to cross-stitch, embroidery, and quilting. This person does not need to be an expert in all areas, however, we greatly appreciate one that has such skills. The person needs to demonstrate significant command over the techniques, therefore capable of helping beginners and those with motor skill challenges learn a useful skill. Being able to explain, demonstrate, and troubleshooting is a must. To adhere to our program philosophy, the goal of such program position is to allowing clients learn a new skill, at the same time experience success, beauty, and sense of community. Therefore, such person must be helpful but not demanding of results, and is able to conduct the session in a supportive manner at all times.
- Report to the art therapist and the volunteer coordinator, ensure client safety and strive for enjoyable learning experiences for clients.
- Able to meet the client where their skills are, and be realistic about time, space, skill level, motor limitations that can present itself in this process.
- Maintain communication with art therapist and volunteer coordinator through email or phone around each session.
- Ensure client safety.
- Able to conduct a group class where everyone's needs are met appropriately.
- Being able to conduct a session with realistic control and expectations on the use of time.
- Supportive of and can work with Sarah's Circle harm-reduction, trauma-informed, and mental health informed philosophy.
- Demonstrate strong boundaries and clear understanding of client/ volunteer roles and responsibilities.
- Adhere to all rules related to volunteers at all times.
