Hurricane Emergency Preparation Meal Deliveries

Each year we provide shelf-stable meals to seniors who receive Meals on Wheels in our service area and are at risk during emergency situations. These Emergency Preparedness meals are for the seniors to put in their pantry in case their regularly delivered meals are missed due to emergency weather like hurricanes or winter storms. As you know hurricanes and winter storms can shut down our cities in this region easily! As safety is a concern, some seniors can have interrupted service in these events, so we want to make sure they don't go hungry in these cases. We need your help to make all these deliveries---we have over 700 meals going to seniors this June!

Check out our pictures from last year’s event: https://www.ssseva.org/gallery/index/album/id/24/

When: Monday, June 25, through Friday, June 29

  1. Volunteers pick up the meals with route instructions at Senior Services Office between 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.
  2. Deliver them to the seniors at home within 24 hours of picking up the meals. (Please deliver the meals no later than 7 p.m. This may mean your pickup and deliveries are done on separate days.)
  3. The delivery receipts are expected back by 4 p.m. 24 hours after your deliveries are made.

Where:

Senior Services Main Office

6350 Center Drive Bldg. 5 Suite 101

Norfolk, VA 23502

How many: Each volunteer and partner will choose an available route for the city of their choice. Each route will take about 3 hours to complete: 2 hours driving, 1 hour available for talking to seniors. Routes will be between 5-20 senior homes depending on how long it takes to drive to each home.

Volunteers are welcome to sign up for as many routes as they want, delivering each route one at a time. Volunteers will need to come back to the main office to pick up for additional routes. Routes are available in Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk, VA Beach, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, Franklin, and Suffolk.

Special notes/requirements:

  1. Volunteers must be screened and have completed the HIPAA and APS training provided by Senior Services. If you have not yet gone through this process, we'd be happy to get you started today! (Contact Kelley Russo 757-222-4522)
  2. Groups must have the Group Waiver Form on file at the Senior Services office.
  3. We ask that volunteers go in groups of two for the protection of seniors and volunteers.
  4. Personal vehicles are used to make deliveries. Volunteers will need trunks cleared out to accommodate meal boxes.
  5. If you've already made a commitment to a program, please know this event would be in addition to that activity.
