ORGANIZATION: Project Open Hand

Project Open Hand’s Grants Intern will work closely with the Institutional Giving Officer and Advancement team within the Development Department in researching and writing foundation grants for Project Open Hand. The Grants Intern will learn about, and help with, all aspects of submitting a grant proposal.

This is an incredible opportunity for a highly competent, energetic and engaged individual to learn about professional nonprofit fundraising strategies with an amazing team of mentors - while interning for an award-winning, historic San Francisco Bay Area social services institution.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills, with sensitivity to appropriate delivery depending on target and audience
  • Ability to build relationships and influence individuals, groups and organizations
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills, with attention to detail and project trouble-shooting
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Excellent filing, organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and seek appropriate support when needed
  • Demonstrate both diplomacy and inquisitiveness: ability to seek and secure information tactfully
  • Openness to learning new tasks and disciplines
  • Collaborative team player and can also work independently
  • Proactive work ethic and willing to pitch in when needed
  • Sensitivity to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, other critical illnesses, as well as seniors and adults with disabilities
  • GPA must be at or above 3.0 and student must be in good academic standing

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND LEARNNG OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Learn all the components of private grants as well as how to structure and write grants
  • Develop prospect research skills
  • Learn how to use online database functions and websites
  • Research potential grants for relevant information
  • Practice grant writing by submitting an actual grant
  • Assist Institutional Giving Officer on various projects as needed
  • Work with other members of development Department by volunteering on event related tasks

AGREEMENT:

  • This is a service learning opportunity. College credit may be available depending on the requirements of specific college or university.
  • 15 hours per week on average; the hours and time commitment are flexible to be set between the Institutional Giving Officer and the internship candidate prior to the start of the internship
  • No housing assistance is available
  • We ask that you not wear fragrances, colognes, or aftershaves, or any other heavily scented products

TIME COMMIMENT

  • Monday-Friday, flexible hours
  • Maximum length is one semester

Mission Statement

Project Open Hand provides food and nourishment to improve the quality of life for the men, women and children it serves. Project Open Hand programs include: meal, grocery and nutrition counseling for people with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; congregate lunch and nutrition education for people over 60 years of age; meal service for homebound and critically ill people under the age of 60. Services are available to eligible clients living in San Francisco and Alameda counties.

Description

Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides meals with love to critically ill neighbors and seniors. Our food is like medicine, helping clients recover from illness, get stronger, and lead healthier lives.

Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers daily to nourish our community.
