The Sacred Heart Center connects Latino families with tools to thrive and flourish. Our work manifests through: A continuum of educational opportunities for adults, Innovative programs for youth and children, Strategic partnerships to meet community needs.

At the Sacred Heart Center we always have free clothes, shoes, stuffed animals, and books available for our visitors...and we always accept donations, too. Once a month we have a "First Fridays Donations Pop-Up" - this is when we take many of these donated items to the Southwood Apartment Complex, located in the city of Richmond, for primarily Latino residents many of whom have limited access to transportation.

We have an immediate need for 3 to 5 people to meet at the Sacred Heart Center (1400 Perry Street) help us load our bus, transport the donations to the Southwood Apartment Complex (1101 Southwood Parkway), unload them, and help us manage the event. At the end of the event, the second shift of volunteers will help us load the leftover donations, transport them back to the Sacred Heart Center, and then unload them.

This volunteer opportunity is a fun way to get moving, help a good cause, and also be in direct contact with our community members.

  • The event is the first Friday of every month.
  • The 1st volunteer shift is from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM.
  • The 2nd shift is from 10:00 AM to around 12:30 PM. (You would meet us at Southwood Apartments and come back to the Center to help us unload the donations).
  • Spanish skills are a plus, but not necessary.
  • Moderate lifting (up to +/- 25 lbs) and walking is required.
  • Alternately, if you want to help out but are not free Friday morning, please contact us and we can have you help us organize the donations on the Thursday before each pop-up.

If you sign up for this event, please confirm with the Volunteer Coordinator in advance that you will be volunteering for the shift you signed up for.

We serve the Latino population primarily through four programmatic areas.

Classes are held twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until noon and we provide an early childhood education program during these classes for children up to 5 years of age. Also, during the summer we offer a bi-lingual day camp for elementary school-aged children.

2. GED preparation classes - The GED exam can be taken in Spanish and the Center serves a critical role as it is the only location in Richmond where students can take preparation classes in Spanish. Classes are taught Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in each of the four core areas of the GED exam: Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Sciences

3. Latino Leadership Institute - A two-semester dual-language program prepares Latino adults to assume leadership roles in the greater Richmond area. Special emphasis is placed on exploring the principles and practices of Latino culture that can infuse new life into leadership development. Classes meet weekly for 12 weeks each semester from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

4. College and Career Bound - This program serves to guide and motivate the next generation of Latinos by matching them with professional mentors who assist these high school students transition into higher education or a career.
