What is it? The Litter Index is a requirement of all Keep America Beautiful Affiliates that looks at trends in litter from year to year. It also helps to identify areas that might need more education on litter prevention and/ or other types of assistance from KPB. For the purposes of this survey, Escambia County has been divided into 14 zones. Each zone will have an assigned group of volunteers to survey it!

How does it work? Volunteers will choose roadways at random within their zone, making sure to select a wide variety of roads-residential, industrial, high traffic, low traffic, etc. The driver will say "Start" and the surveyors will watch the roadside, for a minimum of 1 mile, and will each score that roadway for litter until the driver says "Stop". (The driver does not survey)

The scores are on a scale from 1 to 4, 1 being no litter, 4 being completely littered. Each scorer will have their own score and will record it on their data sheet for each road surveyed. At the end of the survey, all scores will be averaged together to get the final score for each roadway surveyed. Note: Each volunteer group will only survey 10 to 15 roads within their zone! Time commitment per zone is 1 to 2 hours.

Once all the data is collected, KPB will submit to Keep America Beautiful and will do a comparison to last year’s data. KPB will put out a report detailing the process and will recognize all volunteers who participated!
