EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Bikes Not Bombs is a nonprofit organization that uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change. Their programs mobilize youth and adults to be leaders in community transformation. Bikes Not Bombs Volunteer Night is a volunteer oppotyinity to work with bikes and bike parts. No experience required!

Note: We have had volunteers in wheelchairs work in the space. Entering and exiting is wheelchair accessible, same ramp for everyone. Some of the tasks would be quite challenging from a wheelchair, but disassembling wheels, sorting tires, and rolling tubes are easily doable. Mobility in the space can be a little challenging as it gets crowded with bikes and parts. We have accessible bathroom, but getting to it might require a little help from someone to move some bikes. So you might need a little patience, but we welcome you!

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING:

Volunteers will have the opportunity to flatten bikes, disassemble bike wheels, sort tires, roll inner tubes, sort parts, load bikes into a truck, and other things as they come up. It's a hands on volunteering experience! Get ready to get your hands dirty and have some fun!

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Please wear clothes that you don't mind getting a little dirty, since you will be working with bike parts.

WHERE TO MEET:

Come to Bikes Not Bombs at 284 Amory Street in Jamaica Plain. Close to the Stony Brook stop on the Orange Line. We are in a large brick building called The Brewery complex that also houses Mikes Gym, Bella Luna and Milky Way, ULA Cafe, etc. When you come into the parking lot, do not go in the main entrance of the building - instead go all the way to your left in the parking lot, past ULA Cafe, to find our door by the loading dock.

Note that there is also a retail bike shop location, called Bikes Not Bombs, at 18 Bartlett Square in Jamaica Plain. This may be the first thing that comes up on your GPS. Do not go there, come to 284 Amory!

Please arrive by 6:50 pm, for an introduction to the organization and the space.

BIKES NOT BOMBS: Each year we collect roughly 6,000 used bicycles and tons of used parts from our supporters around Greater Boston and New England. We ship most of these bikes overseas to economic development projects through our International Programs in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Bikes that don't get shipped often land in our Youth Programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanics skills in the process of earning bikes to keep for themselves. Our retail Bike Shop also reconditions and sells some of the donated bikes that we receive, employing many graduates of our programs. The Shop's profit from the bicycle sales, parts sales, and repairs goes towards funding our youth and international work.

Mission Statement

One Brick provides support to local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. We enable people to get involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

Description

Headquartered in San Francisco, California, One Brick is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that brings volunteers together to support other local non-profits by adopting an innovative twist to the volunteer experience: we create a friendly and social atmosphere around volunteering, and after each volunteer event -- which typically lasts only 3 to 4 hours -- we invite volunteers to gather at a local restaurant or caf where they can get to know one another in a relaxed social setting.

Our 'commitment-free volunteering' allows you to choose when you volunteer, rather than having to make commitments for a certain number of volunteer hours, or agree to be available every week at a specific time.
