Medical Elective Internship for Students in India

Kenosis projects abroad offer a wide variety of international Medical Elective placements overseas in developing countries. These are individualized to specifically to meet the academic needs of students in medical school and other degree programs training to be doctors, nurses, dentists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and midwives.

Spend your final year of med school on this medical elective / rotation / internship in Belize and consolidate your studies. You will learn from local doctors and help in hospitals and clinics that serve the local citizens, regardless of their income. Free public hospitals and clinics are typically underfunded, understaffed and struggling to meet the needs of everyone they care for. Help is needed in all aspects of the running of the clinics, from basic nursing care to surgeries. You will gain valuable clinical experience, which will look great for future employers, and you’ll be providing valuable help where it is needed most. You will work alongside a local qualified doctor who will mentor you during your stay. If you do have focus in a specific area of medicine, then please let us know and we will place you in line with that. This elective is designed to provide hands on experience to students prior to graduating.

The local hospital will benefit from additional pairs of hands when interns work alongside locally qualified doctors and medical staff. Medical students can get unique and valuable hands-on experience working with patients from communities in a developing country, and the practitioners will support and assess your work to feedback to your school body. It is a great opportunity for you to develop your CV/Resume.

Volunteer Work:

The role of the volunteer depends largely on their skills and experience. Medical students, duties may include administering medication, giving vaccinations, taking vitals and providing general health care, shadowing lead practitioners and providing assistance on daily routines. Those with specialist skills can be placed as required in areas including: Urology, Gynaecology, Dermatology, Pharmacy, dentistry, ER, mobile clinics and General Practitioners. Your competence will be monitored by the local team and feedback given to you regarding your progress. Please be aware that any treatment will be at the discretion of the local team and will be determined by the skills, aptitude and attitude displayed during your placement.

Requirements:

  • All volunteers must be in their final year of medical school onto be accepted onto this placement.
  • You will be asked to send your CV/Resume, a photocopy of your passport, a letter of motivation, consent letter of parent or guardian or reference from your university, medical certificate and 2 references from a former teacher or employer and transcripts before being accepted on this project so that we can send it to the team in India to review, then they can select the best placement for you.
  • All interns will be required to bring their own scrubs and appropriate shoes for working in a hospital.
  • Please bring a laptop with you to document your learning during your placement. Placements for 2-3 (short stay) weeks or more may be considered, if this is in line with another elective in another country. Please speak to a Kenosis advisor to find out more about this.
  • Happy to work in hot and humid climate and rural health clinic and hospitals or cities like Bangalore, Mysore and Nepal.
  • Immunizations (please consult your local travel clinic)
  • Police clearance form (if necessary only)
  • A couple, families and group volunteering is a fun and rich in learning.

As an international health and medical volunteer or intern can gain hands on experience in the local multiple hospitals, and community health clinic. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the local culture, festivals, interact with local family, especially women and their children, youths and exchange your western culture, learn cooking, agriculture farming, gardening, to go for trekking or cycling to nearby waterfalls and huge river, to try for swimming, fishing, boating and elephant watch, when you volunteer in rural communities. Bangalore city is another place to get immersed in Indian culture and local customs and also visit other tourist spots, sculptures, stone temples, British build fort, and so on. You can contribute 2-5 hours a day or more or less for 5 days a week. The weekends are yours and you can plan local sightseeing or short weekend trip to explore local spots. We are flexible according to your convenient times and dates to fix all our volunteer requirements. Description

Kenosis Foundation (KF) is a not-for-profit voluntary organization, registered (Reg # 166/2013-2014) on 29th June 2013, under Sec.7 of the Indian Trusts Act 1882. We focus on rural areas and support women and the children of widows, single moms, abuse victims, victims of physical harassment, and disadvantaged, underprivileged and the economically weaker sections of society. Our head office is located in the city of Bangalore, Karnataka State, India.

We identify poorest of the poor rural villages and work for causes ranging from child welfare, health and education, economic empowerment for women, creating employment opportunities for dropout and underprivileged youths, health and hygiene in communities and schools, After School Programs, Women Self Help Groups (SHG’s), Teach English and Computer, Bio-organiz forming, Animal healthcare, Solidwaste management, building and renovation of beneficiaries homes and schools, youth vocational skill training, organize campaign and training, summer and health camps, life skills education in rural villages and schools, Renovation of beneficiaries house and construction of toilet, women's empowerment and empowering women to start self business and income generating (IGP) activities. Kenosis is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty in rural India.
