Healthcare volunteers in India can work in either local hospitals or slum clinics, shadowing well-respected physicians who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and expertise.

While hospitals are under-resourced and equipment is basic, these institutions are bound by government regulations and cannot allow international volunteers to perform tasks independently. Your primary role is to observe local professionals and learn about the treatment of prevalent diseases in India, and as a result this is better suited to volunteers with less experience. Volunteers generally assist with routine jobs, such as taking the height, weight and blood pressure measurements. During routine check-ups, volunteers can provide advice around nutrition, general health and sanitation.

Volunteers on the slum clinic placement will have the opportunity to perform more hands-on tasks such as treating minor injuries as well as cleaning and bandaging wounds. This can be a busy but rewarding placement, and it’s better suited to qualified professionals or experienced students.

More experienced volunteers may request to work in their area of expertise or training; however, it is important to note that volunteers are only able to perform tasks relevant to their skills and qualifications.

Long-term volunteers (three months or longer) will have more scope to assist with hands-on tasks and fully qualified doctors can occasionally assist with surgical procedures, subject to their qualifications and experience.

Volunteers must present their practicing license/certificate or proof of medical study to our local staff upon your arrival in Delhi/Bangalore. This can be a letter from your professor or a copy of your academic transcript.
