Elementary Literacy Volunteer: read with a child once a week

ORGANIZATION: Wayzata Public Schools

  • 15 people are interested

Wayzata Public Schools' Literacy Volunteer Program focuses on improving the reading skills of struggling readers in elementary schools. The students are not non-readers, but usually have difficulty with comprehension or fluency. Literacy volunteers generally help students in these areas by listening to them read out loud. In addition to improved reading skills, strong relationships are forged between the student and the volunteer. Often, this helps build the student's self-confidence when it comes to their ability in reading.

Books, materials, and training are provided. The ultimate goal of the Literacy Volunteer Program is to help students learn to love to read. We do not teach them to read, but encourage them by being their coach and reading partner.

Commitment: Training begins in October. Weekly volunteering runs from November to May. Literacy volunteers come into the schools and meet weekly with an assigned student for 20-30 minutes, one time a week.
Location: The program is offered at all of the Wayzata Public Schools' elementary schools.

The timeline for the program is as follows:
October - all volunteer training (optional)
Late October/Early November- orientation at specific school for volunteers
Week of November 6 - reading begins
Week of May 20 - program ends
