The Iowa International Center has been invited to be part of the Des Moines Arts Festival at Western Gateway Park (June 22-24). IIC will be tabling this year and running an art-activity based on recognizing cultural diversity and appreciating one’s own identity, through self-portraiture. At the event, volunteers will be:

  • Explaining the project and welcoming guests to participate in creating self-portraiture through various media (sharpies, paint, stickers, crayons, and textiles)
  • Giving participants prompts to help reflection on identity and family history that they can integrate into their self-portrait (prompt card will be available)
  • Creating self-portraiture or helping others with their portraits
  • Distributing information on Iowa International Center
  • Explaining how Iowa International Center engages with issues of multiculturalism (training provided day of event)

For over 75 years, we have provided personal and professional opportunities linking Iowans with peoples from around the world. The Iowa International Center also provides access to critical resources to Iowans, new Iowans (including refugees and immigrants), and international visitors in Iowa to help our state become a more inclusive and welcoming place to live, work and raise a family.

The Iowa International Center's key programs and activities include the following:
