Gardening to Make a Difference

We need two types of volunteers:

1) Gardeners of all ages who love tending to plants.

2) Strong workers who like moving wood chips, picking weeds, helping to harvest crops, etc.

The Antioch Garden is a project of World Hunger Team. It is a 3,000 square foot outdoor garden. It is on the site of "The Branch of Nashville", a food pantry and ESL training facility that serves over 400 struggling families in the Antioch area.

The garden was previously managed by a gentleman that has since retired. World Hunger Team took it on as a project to try new growing methods:

1) Trellis farming. We installed 27 trellises on the site.

2) Drip irrigation. While nothing new, it is helping us create "The Lazy Man's Community Garden", in which we do not need someone on site every morning and evening to water the plants.

We are growing a wide range of crops on the site and the plants are doing well. But they need some TLC, and we need people who love to garden and have some time on their hands. Is that you?

Mission Statement

We place innovative indoor hydroponic growing systems into food deserts and other food-challenged locations, that enable anyone - of any age - from any background - of any mobility or skill sets - to grow organic food year-round to feed themselves, their families, and their communities.

Description

World Hunger Team is currently operating a 3,000 square foot conventional garden at "The Branch of Nashville", a food pantry and ESL training site in Antioch, TN that assists over 400 needy families per month.

In-kind volunteers are needed to manage the outdoor garden this summer and into the fall. Later in the year, we will need volunteers to tend to the plants in an indoor hydroponic garden we will be building at the site.

Botanists and master gardeners are also sought, as we are constantly testing heirloom and hybrid seeds to maximize food production. We also seek to grow foods that are preferred and sought after by our constituents. For example, collard greens are in high demand in primarily African-American communities. We have found a variety of collard that grows exceptionally well, and is very tasty when picked as young leaves. The plants continue to produce month-after-month, and grow easily year-round so this crop can be enjoyed on an ongoing basis.
