Help Deliver Free Summer Meals with 'Picnic in the Park'

Picnic in the Park offers free, nutritious meals, activities and enrichment opportunities to ensure that summer is fun for all kids in our county. While volunteers manage and support individual park sites, drivers are needed to deliver the meals from our warehouse to the sites in downtown Santa Barbara, Goleta and Isla Vista. We are currently seeking volunteers to help us between June 11 through August 10.
Picnic in the Park offers free, nutritious meals, activities and enrichment opportunities to ensure that summer is fun for all kids in our county. Community volunteers and groups manage and support individual park sites, while drivers drop off meals at the sites where the on-site groups handle distribution.
For many children who receive free and reduced-priced meals during the school year, summer can mean hunger. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child's need for good nutrition. In fact, 84% of children in our county who receive free or reduced-priced lunches during the school year don't receive meal assistance during the summer, a time of critical brain development. That's 34,000 children in our community.
Ideal Volunteers:
Are able to commit - as an individual or organization - to multiple shifts throughout the summer (ex: come every Wednesday or pick a week and come M-F) to provide continuity, however people with limited availability are still encouraged to help out when they can.
Available for 3.5 hours, start to finish, during lunchtime on weekdays during the summer.

Feel comfortable driving a large vehicle (supplied by the Foodbank) and hold a valid driver's license.
Have familiarity/sense of direction of the Santa Barbara, Goleta and Isla Vista areas.
This opportunity originates from and ends at the Foodbank warehouse located a 4554 Hollister Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA 93110 and involves driving between this location, our downtown Santa Barbara site, Goleta site and our Isla Vista site.

OUR APPROACH
The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is committed to taking a negative thing - hunger - and through our combined community efforts transforming it into a positive thing - health. This leap forward in health is achieved with three ingredients: food, education and empowerment. The challenges of Hunger, Nutrition and Obesity used to be separate areas dealt with by different approaches and by different agencies and groups. The Foodbank is now tackling all three of these problems at once - through a nationally recognized continuum of programs that provide cradle to graduation intervention in children’s lives.
This builds what we call their food literacy: their ability to look after themselves with food - to budget, shop cook and use food responsibly. If we can transform their relationship to food to being one of using it as a scarce and valuable resource to power their personal health, then that is going to create that tipping point that makes a huge transformation in the health of Santa Barbara County.
