Position Summary

The City Tutors (CT) is looking for individuals interested in promoting science to non-science audiences. Individuals would create intriguing, simple to understand science videos for the general audience. The goal is to produce a minimum of 4 videos (5-10 minutes long). The project will contain elements of professional development, conceptualization, storyboarding, production, and post-production phases, with periodic elements of sample audience testing and evaluation.

The videographer/video editor that volunteers for this position must have a working knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro. Basic working knowledge is fine, as long as they have a desire to learn more.

Members of the lab will use the short videos when giving talks about their work, and the videos will be made available to high school and undergraduate instructors.

The overall goal of this project is to increase public understanding of nanotechnology and renewable energy fields. You don’t need knowledge in nanotech. You should have a background in science (bio or chem preferrably), and have an interest in presenting these topics to a public, non-scientific population.

About

The City Tutors (CT) is a volunteer tutoring program and non-profit organization with a goal to provide meaningful opportunities for college students to build professional skills and share their knowledge while helping to enhance and expand academic support to students in underserved programs around NYC. The City Tutors offers tutoring support and career development initiatives across four of the five boroughs as well as delivering academic services to all areas within the CCNY umbrella.

The City Tutors is currently partnered with the Eisele Research Group, a nanotechnology group based out of the Center for Discovery and Innovation at the City College of New York. As part of a recently awarded NSF grant to the Eisele Rsearch Group, a Video Project entitled "When Nanoscience Meets Renewable Energy" was created. The overall goal of this project is to increase public understanding of nanotechnology, and how fundamental research in nanoscience can pave the way to new renewable energy technologies. Increased public knowledge and engagement is only possible when the information is clearly disseminated to the public regarding what kind of research is being done and how the research can contribute to our society. Unfortunately, communicating and promoting science beyond a scientific audience proves challenging, a task that researchers themselves are not trained for. This project then aims to be a part of that change.

Mission Statement

The City Tutors (CT) is a NYC wide volunteer tutoring and mentoring hub that ensures historically underserved communities have equitable access to resources that are fundamental to educational and professional success.

Description

Our vision is to create a hub where any New Yorker can leverage their academic and professional skills and content knowledge to uplift their community and where disadvantaged communities can access resources that they need.

We see tutoring as a way to empower individuals to work in the community. We provide flexible times, convenient locations, and meaningful experiences, allowing more community members to participate and to support community partners for longer.

We believe tutoring must be a reflective act that both helps strengthen individuals' support of others and helps individuals better understand themselves. We provide our tutors with access to industry mentors who help connect the work they are doing with us with what they've done in the past and what they want to do in the future.

We believe in leveraging the workforce skills of our community of volunteers by pairing those in need of professional support with industry experts who can provide insight into specific fields and feedback on professional documents.

We see the City Tutors as an opportunity to bring people together under a common purpose. We want like-minded individuals to feel they are part of a fellowship, to build their network with people within their discipline, and to expand the disciplines and industries they've been exposed to.
