Intern Title: Legislative Intern

Department: Government Affairs

Internship Manager: Manager, Government Affairs
Time Commitment: Up to 20 hours per week


POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Legislative Intern will work closely with the Manager of Government Affairs to monitor National Stroke Association’s legislative and regulatory healthcare priorities. The Legislative Intern will gain first hand exposure to real world health policy issues as well as legislative and rule-making processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement National Stroke Association’s legislative and regulatory agendas under the supervision of the Manager of Government Affairs.
  • Analyze federal and state level legislation and proposed regulations for their impact on the stroke community.
  • Draft action alerts, e-newsletter articles, web content, policy briefs, regulatory comments, correspondence, monthly reports and other documents as needed.
  • Work with Stroke Advocacy Network members to increase the effectiveness and level of their individual advocacy activities.
  • Work with other National Stroke Association departments to cross-promote the Stroke Advocacy Network in order to maximize its reach.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned.

Accountabilities:

  • Support the achievement of goals outlined in the Government Affairs Department’s strategic plan.
  • Deliver outcomes within defined budgets and timelines.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with other organizations and with other National Stroke Association departments and programs.
  • Successfully perform the above responsibilities with an appropriate level of supervision.
  • Display a positive, professional image of National Stroke Association.
  • Adhere to all internal policies and procedures stated in the employee handbook.

Qualifications:

  • In process of obtaining a four-year college degree in political science, public policy, public health, public administration or a related degree program.
  • An understanding of legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare system and/or healthcare policy a plus.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to write for multiple audiences (e.g., the general public, legislators, regulators, National Stroke Association staff, etc.).
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • An ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • A desire to learn and grow in this position.
  • Knowledge of MS Office applications and a willingness and ability to learn other computer software applications.
  • Experience using CQ/Roll Call StateTrack strongly preferred.

Compensation:

  • Position is for University credit.

WHILE PERFORMING THIS JOB, IT WILL REQUIRE: Entering data into the computer and retrieving data from the computer; analyzing data; reading; writing; speaking on the telephone; and using repetitive motion of the hand and wrist by utilizing the computer and preparing and sending out literature.
