We couldn't do what we do without our wonderful volunteers! Our volunteer teams assist the staff with Committal Services & Visitor Information. Every committal service is organized by a team of Cemetery Volunteers, who assist the family with anything they may need before or during the service, as well as assisting cemetery guests at the visitor center. These volunteers are the backbone of the interment process; greeting families and guests, coordinating with the military honor guards, organizing and conducting services, and securing the caskets or urns until the caretakers can lay them to rest. Cemetery Volunteers are available to answer questions and assist visitors with finding the gravesites of their loved ones.

Potential volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  • Possess a calm, quiet, compassionate demeanor to assist grieving family members with one of the most difficult days they will encounter.
  • Mentally and emotionally capable of responding to visitors who may express their grief in a variety of ways, including confusion, apathy, anger, or hyper-focused attention to detail.
  • Able to work both autonomously and in a team environment.
  • Able to stand or walk for long periods of time (2 - 6 hours) in various weather conditions.
  • Able to lift or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Compliance with Idaho State HIPAA and Privacy regulations.
  • Possess a valid Idaho driver's license.
  • Available for at least one full day, on the same day each week, Monday - Friday.

Potential volunteers will shadow various volunteer teams over a period of several visits. Once the potential volunteers are comfortable with the volunteer responsibilities, they will meet with the volunteer coordinator for an assessment. If it's determined to be mutually beneficial, new volunteers will receive a welcome packet and be scheduled to join a team on a specific day of the week. If the Cemetery has reached its maximum number of "regularly scheduled" volunteers needed, then new volunteers will be trained and added to the substitution roster so that they can receive announcements when a substitute or extra personnel are needed.

Mission Statement

Honor Veterans and their families with respectful interment services in a dignified final resting place that commemorates their service to our nation.

Description

In 2004 the State of Idaho, Division of Veterans Services, established a State Veterans Cemetery on 76.5 acres adjacent to the Dry Creek Cemetery in Boise, Idaho. To date, it is the only veterans' cemetery in the state. The cemetery landscape and committal shelter have been designed to provide a place of respectful remembrance for veterans and their families. Committal services are conducted in the shelter Monday - Friday and can include military honors and the final, brief good-byes. Eligible veterans and their spouses may choose from a variety of plot types for both casket and urn interments. Each interment is registered in the "Nationwide Gravesite Locator" so that visitors may find their loved ones in any veterans' cemetery across the nation.
