Development Volunteer (Part Time, Unpaid)
The Bay Chapter seeks a motivated, energetic, and detail-oriented individual with strong written and verbal communication skills and a basic understanding of nonprofit fundraising. This volunteer will need to be highly organized and possess strong critical thinking skills in order to perform research projects, analyze data, and assist with event planning. The Development Department is responsible for ensuring that the Sierra Club has necessary funding by creating and implementing a fundraising plan detailing how the organization can obtain financial support. The office identifies sources such as individual investors, grants, charitable events, marketing opportunities, and corporate investors to successfully build a large donor base. As the Development Volunteer, you will be a part of a team focusing on the organization and collection of donor information and monetary contributions.
An Ideal Candidate:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Highly organized
- Strong research skills
- Event planning and coordinating experience
- Familiar with Microsoft Office, Google Docs & Sheets, and various database applications
- Available to work out of our office in Berkeley for at least 2 months, 4-12 hours a week, Monday-Friday, during normal business hours
- Ability to work occasional weeknights and weekends for special events
- Some local travel may be required (cars are not required)
- Passion and drive to take action on local environmental issues and uphold Sierra Club sustainability goals
Key Responsibilities:
- Help compile profiles of potential major donors
- Data compilation and organization through Excel and Google spreadsheet formats
- Research local charitable foundations and assist with the grant writing process
- Research miscellaneous fundraising opportunities (crowdfunding, business partnerships, etc.) and make recommendations
- Plan, implement, and attend events
- Call, email, and follow up with sponsors and guests
- Data entry and other administrative support

The San Francisco Bay Chapter is the local branch of the Sierra Club, America's largest and most effective grassroots environmental organization. The Bay Chapter is comprised of the nearly 40,000 Sierra Club members who live in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, and San Francisco counties.
The Bay Chapter has a rich and vibrant history of environmental leadership going back to our founding in 1924. We have played a big role in shaping the Bay Area that you know and love.
