Under direction of JerseySTEM leadership, the HR Director will plan, organize, direct and manage human resources activities to support the mission of the organization. This includes recruiting professional and student volunteers, onboarding volunteers, recommending and implementing training approaches, identifying methods to engage and retain volunteers, and offboarding volunteers. The HR Director will advise organization leadership on human resources issues and will develop and implement effective HR policies and processes across the organization.
Typical Functions of the Volunteer Position
- Effectively recruit, manage and lead the Human Resources volunteer team
- Function as a Human Resources expert and provide guidance to department managers on HR policies and practices
- Serve as a liaison between the HR team and the rest of the organization
- Recommend and oversee recruiting and onboarding strategies and processes
- Assess training needs of the organization and determine appropriate solutions
- Recommend and oversee approaches to engage and retain volunteers
- Ensure organization leadership and volunteers follow appropriate HR policies and procedures as set forth by the HR Department.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of Human Resources policies and practices, especially recruiting and onboarding
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience in a managerial or supervisory role
- Well organized, with strong attention to detail
- Comfort managing a virtual HR team
- Resourceful and creative
Required Education and Experience
5-7+ years broad experience in Human Resources, with particular expertise in recruiting, onboarding, training and retention/engagement.

JerseySTEM is a grassroots 501(c) nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math ("STEM") education to girls grade 5-8 from underserved communities in New Jersey. We partner with socially responsible companies and their employees, youth organizations in underserved communities, and civic-minded college students and universities. Together we develop and deliver innovative, hands-on, and online afterschool projects and inquiry-based learning opportunities that develop teamwork, 21st-century problem-solving skills, and self-esteem.
Description
Incorporated in 2013, JerseySTEM started bringing afterschool enrichment programs to middle school girls in 2015.
We have since provided 1,000 students with exposure to afterschool enrichment programs delivering more than 20,000 hours of instruction. Students learn to code, build robots, solve problems and through that process gain self-esteem and confidence that they can be the leaders of tomorrow.
