Make a real difference in someone's life!

Compassus Hospice, is looking for compassionate volunteers willing to donate their time to provide exceptional end-of-life care to local hospice patients and their families.

Compassus Hospice is looking for Pet Therapy volunteers (handlers with dogs only). A visit from a therapy dog can be so beneficial. Terminally ill patients enjoy the extra attention and unconditional love they feel from a four-legged companion. In order to volunteer and visit patients, you must have your own dog who is already certified through Therapy Dogs International, West Michigan Therapy Dogs or Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs.

Hours are very flexible, weekdays, evenings or weekends. Dog/Handler teams typically visit patients 1-2 times per month.

Any pet owner will agree that the presence of a dog will warm the heart and inspire the spirit which is why Hospice Compassus is seeking friendly canines to join our volunteer team. Volunteers along with their furry friends would be fostering meaningful connections with patients in the Metro Detroit area that could benefit from pet therapy. . The ideal volunteer is patient, compassionate, and has a heart for the elderly and dying.

For the protection of our patients all pets MUST be certified through an organization which assesses their temperment as therapy animals.

Therapy animals must be certified through an appropriate organization such as Pet Partners, Therapy Dogs International, AKC Therapy Dog Program and Therapy Dogs Incorporated. All canines must be current with vaccinations and pass an assessment for compatibility with specific hospice patient. Some training is also required for handlers to ensure you feel equipped to help our hospice patients.

Mission Statement

The Colleagues of Compassus Hospice are committed to keeping The Hospice Promise by delivering the highest quality of care, serving the needs of patients and families and spreading the stories of hospice to those with whom they come into contact.

Description

Most volunteers feel personally rewarded through offering their time, energy and compassion when they see how much they are able to help patients and families. Further benefits frequently experienced by our volunteers include:

  • Greater self-knowledge from insights gained from relationships with patients, their families and from the hospice volunteer training.
  • Spiritual growth from supporting a person through the final days while increasing the awareness of their own sense of spiritual values.

The people that make up Compassus are dedicated to compassionate care, clinical excellence and providing comfort and support to patients and their families with end-of-life issues. This includes our volunteers.

At Compassus, we believe that every life is unique and deserves a meaningful and personal final journey. Perhaps you’ve experienced hospice services with a member of your family, or are looking for a meaningful way to volunteer your time.
