Fresno Barrios Unidos ("FBU") is a 501(c)(3) organization serving youth in the Fresno area since 1994. FBU is currently seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on the Board of Directors. Some of our programs currently include:

El 'oven Noble (The Noble Youth): A youth development, support and leadership program for male youth ages 10-24. The program incorporates an approach that is curriculum based on the philosophy that young men need the guidance of other men, their family and community. Specific goals of El Joven Noble include: character, development, promotion of healthy relationships, reduction and prevention of unplanned pregnancies, substance abuse and community violence.

Teen Success: The Teen Success program provides a stepping stone for first-time teen mothers to be successful. This is done by helping them finish high school, developing concrete goals for their futures and preventing a second unplanned pregnancy. Through weekly support groups, teen mothers receive guidance from facilitators and develop supportive relationships with their peers. The program also connects the young moms in the program with community mentors.

Promotores de Salud : This is a team of young men whose primary responsibility is to educate and inform other young men and their families on health care. The young men provide outreach at health fairs, community events and in neighborhoods.

Healthy Decisions & "Let's Talk" Parent Workshops: Healthy Decisions is a non-bias medically accurate comprehensive sex education program that meets California state standards. Topics covered in the workshops include self-esteem, body image, anatomy, birth control, STD s, HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, assertive communication skills, teen dating violence, media pressures and making healthy decisions. Real change cannot happen without the support of families. That's where the "Let's Talk" Parent Workshops come in. Through these multi-lingual workshops, FBU provides parents with information on how to effectively communicate with children about puberty, sex and sexuality, so that they can combine the conversation with their moral values.

Board member time commitment varies, but at a minimum requires participation in monthly Board meetings, assistance with fundraising throughout the year and service on at least one Board sub-committee - Governance, Fund Development, Annual Fundraiser (Noche En El Barrio), Public Relations or Finance. Appointment must be for at least one calendar year. Current or retired professionals experienced in education, marketing, business, law enforcement, or government are especially encouraged to apply.
