Houston Kitten Foster Volunteer

This position supports the life-saving work of Best Friends Animal Care. You can help save the lives of kittens most in need of homes in the Harris County shelter!

Function/Impact:

• Provide a temporary home for kittens and sometimes their mother until they are able to be adopted into their forever home, go on transport, or be transferred to a Network Partner.

Time Commitment and Location of Work:

• Varies based on the needs of the individual kitten, but typically the fostering time frame would be 2-4 weeks for young, healthy kittens; or up to 12 weeks for newborns with mom or kittens not thriving.

• While this is an ongoing opportunity, foster homes are most needed during the critical time period of March through October

Goals:

• Increase Best Friends’ lifesaving capacity by providing a safe temporary home for kittens in need

Core responsibilities:

• Provide a safe and secure indoor location where the kittens will have no contact with other cats or kittens. All supplies will be provided if needed (food, litter, etc).
• Provide care for the kittens, to include basic medical care (e.g. administering antibiotics and eye drops). Instructions and support will be provided.
• Provide socialization and enrichment activities for the kittens
• Safely provide exposure to kitten-friendly dogs, if possible
• Provide transport to vet clinics for appointments
• Track and input hours worked into the Best Friends volunteer database

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Enjoy the company of kittens
• Ability to provide necessary medical care based on veterinary direction
• Must have transportation
• Must sign Best Friends Volunteer Foster Agreement
• We can match kittens to your comfort and skill level, based on medical needs and/or socialization needs
• Please note that any Best Friends non-exempt staff member whose job function is similar in nature to this opportunity is not eligible to volunteer for this position
