Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma, or equivalent
• Be at least 18 years of age at the start of the program
• Have reliable transportation
• Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
• Satisfy National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria, including state and national sex offender registry checks, state criminal history checks, FBI criminal history checks, and state Child Abuse/Neglect Registry checks.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Act as part of a team to complete Together We Prepare goals and objectives:

• Facilitate Preparedness Education (PE) presentations, educating community members about disaster preparedness.
• Act as a member of the Disaster Action Team (DAT), responding to local emergencies such as single-family fires. This may include some weekends and overnights.
• Coordinate Red Cross involvement in community events and attend events
• Participate in team meetings, relevant trainings (American Red Cross, AmeriCorps, and others), and service projects.

Serve as the preparedness coordinator in conjunction with volunteer leads designated to oversee all preparedness activities and volunteers serving within these programs:

• Manage the Preparedness Education program, which includes outreach, scheduling presentations, and coordinating volunteers
• Prepare and edit Preparedness Education materials as necessary
• Train and facilitate all PE volunteers and keep a detailed calendar of PE presentations available to volunteers
• Assist the Disaster Program Manager in the coordination of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign which includes outreach, media, planning events, recruiting volunteers, scheduling appointments, and coordinating home visits to install free smoke alarms in the community
• Support efforts with The Pillowcase Project to engage youth in the community
• Help to support fellow Together We Prepare members on their overall preparedness needs

Act as a member of an AmeriCorps*State Program:

• Participate in National Days of Service
• Promote the Together We Prepared program and AmeriCorps as a whole to community members and recipients of our services
• Wear the AmeriCorps logo at all times when earning service hours
• Participate in professional development trainings
• Work directly with clients in recovery support

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• College degree (associate’s degree or higher)
• Current valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
• Enthusiastic and positive attitude toward helping others
• Ability to adapt to needs of the community as well as changes in policy, procedure, and/or other areas of service.
• Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility and initiative
• Experience in social work, criminal justice, fire science, and/or emergency management
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via written and oral methods
• Interest or experience in disaster relief and preparedness
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
• Comfortable with public speaking and group facilitation
• Ability to mobilize on national disaster assignments lasting a maximum of three weeks
• Team-oriented

Non-Essential Functions

AmeriCorps members in the Together We Prepare Program are encouraged to participate in a 2 to 3-week national deployment for disaster response, given the opportunity arises.

Physical Demands

Within this role, members are regularly required to speak and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Members may be required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Members must be able to travel in all kinds of weather and have reliable transportation. If on national deployment, additional physical demands may include lifting 40-50 lbs., staying in staff shelters, and living in difficult conditions.
