Many people feel comforted knowing they, or a loved one, will not be alone at the end of life. You can help by providing a reassuring presence at the bedside in the final hours/days of a patient's life by becoming a volunteer Transitions Companion. Simple ways you can help - Hold the patient's hand, read to them, play music, or just sit quietly and be a comforting presence. If family and/or caregivers are present, you can help support them in many meaningful ways from answering phones to providing guidance. Help patients have the most compassionate end-of-life experience possible by being with them in their final moments. It is an honor to have that intimate experience. The 2.5 hour Transitions Companion Training is highly encouraged, after completion of Empath Health Volunteer Orientation and Patient & Family Support.
Volunteer Orientation is a four-hour training session for individuals interested in learning more about Empath Health’s volunteer opportunities.
Patient/Family Support Training consists of 12 hours of training for individuals interested in providing caring support to Suncoast Hospice patients and families. Empath Health Volunteer Orientation is a prerequisite.

Our Legacy
Founded as Suncoast (1977) and Tidewell (1980) as true pioneers in hospice care, each of our organizations adapted to change and grew to meet the needs of the community, ultimately evolving to become Empath Health and Stratum Health System, respectively.
We came together as Empath Health in March 2021, creating the country’s largest non-profit hospice and home care-based health care organization. Rooted in the remarkable people that give so much of themselves, we look to further our unwavering commitment to uniquely high standards by now growing together.
