ORGANIZATION: Early Settlement Mediation

Volunteers are needed in the Northeast Region of Oklahoma!*

Each year hundreds of Oklahomans give of their time and energy to become volunteer mediators through the Early Settlement Mediation Program, a program sponsored by the Administrative Office of the Courts. County District Courts use program volunteers to assist parties with cases that are disputed on the small claims dockets as well as domestic cases, such as divorce and child custody matters. This service provides no cost mediation services to our communities so that the power remains in the parties hands to make their own decisions. These volunteers have consistently achieved a success rate higher than the nation's average and in turn cleared dockets for Judges so that the Courts may run more efficiently.

Training will be June 27th and 28th from 9:00am- 5:00pm both days.

More information about the program can be found here: http://www.oscn.net/static/adr/default.aspx

Description

The Alternative Dispute Resolution System in Oklahoma is currently made up of thirteen community-based mediation centers and is referred to as Early Settlement Mediation. These programs are funded by the state legislature through the Oklahoma Dispute Resolution Act, 12 O.S. Supp. 1997, ยง 1801 et seq., and supervised by the Administrative Director of the Courts (ADC) through his designee, the ADR System Director, with the ongoing input of the Dispute Resolution Advisory Board.

Each program within the system is certified by annual contracts with the local sponsors of the community-based centers and the executive officer(s) of the state agencies. The Northeast program sponsor is Rogers State University and services six counties: Rogers, Washington, Craig, Osage, Ottawa and Nowata.

Mediator candidates for the programs are required to complete training and an experience-based practicum in order to achieve certification as a mediator. They are not charged fees for their training. Mediators for the Early Settlement Program work as volunteers.
