The National MS Society is offering an exciting opportunity within the Development department. The internship can provide school credit and offers valuable experience in the non-profit, fundraising, and event planning industries. The office is located in Kansas City and we are currently looking to fill unpaid Special Events/Development intern positions for students looking for a career in non-profit, marketing, fundraising, and/or communications. Selected interns will play a vital role in helping drive Bike MS fundraising campaigns and providing support to ongoing participants and sponsors. Candidates must be self-motivated, a team player, results-oriented and dedicated to making difference in the lives of people living with and affected by MS. Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Day to Day

  • Each day the Special Events/Development Intern will support the Development team with the successful execution of Bike MS events in the Mid-America Market, Kansas City Office, through logistical planning, recruitment and cultivation of participants and teams, community outreach, top fundraiser recognition, and general support.

  • Grassroots marketing
  • Utilize social networks including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Utilize local NMSS website and internet to promote events
  • Office duties: bulk mailings, cold calls, database management
  • Other duties as assigned

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the processes of coordinating events involving large groups of participants and volunteers in multiple locations.
  • Learn strategies to increase participant engagement through cultivation and recruitment activities.
  • Student will be able to demonstrate a broad range of relevant communication/marketing skills and strategies.

Description

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more MS research, offers more services to people with MS, provides more professional education programs and advances more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world. Through its home office and fifty-state network of chapters, the National MS Society provides assistance to over a million people annually in its continuing mission to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. The Mid America Chapter serves 159 counties in Kansas and Missouri.

Seeking out and engaging volunteers to the MS cause is at the very core of our business. Each year the Society organizes a series of community events that provide many opportunities for the enthusiastic volunteer. The Society offers two key fundraising activities: Bike MS, and Walk MS Walk. The Society also engages volunteers to help influence law-makers at the federal, state and municipal levels toward legislation important to people with MS. The Society is looking for passionate volunteers with expertise in areas such as: marketing communications, public relations, corporate and donor development, medical, legal, administrative and organizational expertise.
