ORGANIZATION: Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)

This is a NFTE Startup Tech class who will be hosting a Showcase competition at Peekskill High School.

Your Task

As a volunteer judge, you are tasked with evaluating each team’s business as though you are a venture capitalist considering an investment. You will evaluate teams based on a few criteria that are outlined in the Startup Tech Judging Rubric, primarily:

  • How good is the idea?
  • How good is the app that the team built?
  • How good is the business plan?
  • How good is the pitch?

The room will be set up a little bit like a science fair for tech entrepreneurs, and you will be able to circle around the room and talk to student teams about their work. We ask that you please remember that the business plans and apps you are judging are designed by students. Our goal here is to encourage young people to develop their entrepreneurial mindset and passion for technology.

Scoring

As you talk to the student teams, you will use a Judging Rubric to determine a preliminary score for each section. After each presentation, add the subsection scores to determine a preliminary total score. This scoring should be done without consulting your fellow judges. After you are done meeting with all the student teams, you may revisit your rubrics to modify your initial scores, taking into account how students performed relative to their fellow participants.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

About Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)

Location:

120 WALL STREET, 18th floor, NEW YORK, NY 10005, US

Mission Statement

The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship's mission is to provide programs that inspire young people from low-income communities to stay in school, to recognize business opportunities and to plan for successful futures.

Description

Founded in New York City in 1987 by Steve Mariotti, a former entrepreneur turned high school math teacher in the South Bronx, NFTE began as a program to prevent dropouts and improve academic performance among students who were at risk of failing or quitting school.

Combining his business background with his desire to teach at-risk students, Steve discovered that when young people from low-income communities are given the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, their innate "street smarts" can easily develop into "academic smarts" and "business smarts." Through entrepreneurship, young people discover that what they are learning in the classroom is relevant to the real world.

To date, NFTE has worked with nearly 500,000 young people from low-income communities in programs across the U.S. and around the world.
