Purpose of Position: To work in collaboration with students’ IT and computer tutor to provide math instruction and support to adult literacy students looking for employment.
Time Commitment: 2-4 hours/week, with 4 month commitment
Qualifications:
- Excellent reading and math skills
- Interest in working with adult learners at various levels of literacy
- Interest in working with culturally diverse adult learners
- Patience and flexibility
- Reliable
Duties: Work with adult literacy students who are unemployed or underemployed and seeking employment. The volunteer will be responsible for providing math instruction to a small group of students enrolled in the Phenomenal Women in STEM Program. This collaborative effort will help train and equip underserved females in the STEM, IT, and Robotics fields. Women, aged 18 and over, will have the opportunity to receive training and earn certification in a variety of programs, including Intro to PC Fundamentals, Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS), and CompTIA's A+ Computer Technician. Nehemiah Center’s Executive Director Randi Francis stated "We do not want to set up our students for failure, so we must ensure that each of our clients has acquired the educational proficiency to attain these certifications". All activities completed will need to be tracked and reported to the student’s coordinator.
Location: Reading Connections’ Greensboro office or on-site at the Nehemiah Center
